Congratulations to Year 10 students Lauren Smith and Lexi Mitchell, placing second in the inaugural Mayor’s Telstra Technology Awards. In addition to their second place, the girls received the Spirit of Competition Award.

The inaugural Mayor’s Telstra Technology Awards consisted of two separate competition phases in Terms 1 and 2, as well as a Final Pitch and Presentation Night. The Awards purpose was to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship, by helping students in the Toowoomba Region unlock their problem solving potential and take their big technology ideas to the next level.

The success of the team was a culmination of five months of tireless work.

Phase 1 of the competition required the team to outline their innovative and original technological idea or concept. A panel of judges then selected the Finalist Teams to move on to Phase 2 of the awards to further develop their idea or concept. During Phase 2, saw Lauren and Lexie travel to Toowoomba to participate in a series of mentoring sessions with industry experts, held at TAFE Queensland. During the mentoring sessions, the girls learnt the intricacies of product development, marketing and public speaking.

The culmination of the competition was the Final Pitch Night held in the refectory at USQ Toowoomba. On the night, the team had five minutes to pitch their idea to a panel of judges after which the judges questioned the team about their technology. Pitch Night was much like the television show Shark Tank.

Lauren and Lexie developed the SchoolMate App that will assist students from small feeder schools transition to Clifton High School. The overall broad vision was to reduce the stress and anxiety for all students transitioning into high school. Product trials have been extremely successful with a number of students asking when the App will be live and available to students.

At present Lauren and Lexie are investigating options to convert their SchoolMate App prototype into a fully functional working App.
